Mentor Role

For a successful mentoring relationship, it is important for the mentor to:


  1. Support the mentee’s development of professional and interpersonal competencies through strategic questioning, goal setting, and planning
  2. Agree to, and schedule uninterrupted time with your mentee
  3. Create a supportive and trusting environment
  4. Listen actively and act as a sounding board
  5. Openly and honestly share “lessons learned” from your own experience
  6. Provide helpful and constructive feedback
  7. Encourage your mentee by giving them genuine positive reinforcement
  8. Seek assistance if questions arise that you cannot answer
